Director: George Cukor
With: Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Doris Nolan, Lew Ayres, and Edward Everett Horton.
Why this one
This is Grant and Hepburn’s third film together, two years before The Philadelphia Story. Cukor gives the comedy a melancholy streak beneath the polished manners. Watch Lew Ayres as Hepburn’s brother Ned: his charm cannot quite hide the cost of staying in that house.
Included in the Criterion Collection. 100% positive critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, from 30 reviews (checked October 2).
A familiar face, twice
Edward Everett Horton didn’t have to start from scratch. He plays Nick Potter here, the same role he played in the 1930 film. AFI also notes that Hepburn had understudied Linda in the Broadway production before finally playing her on screen.
Film notes: AFI · Criterion. Screening: American Cinematheque.
